Bideford: North Devon

A guide to Bideford and the surrounding area

Sitting on the banks of the River Torridge, Bideford is a thriving market town and working port, and was once – in the 16th Century – Britain’s third largest port. The renowned Pannier market opens twice a week to sell the region’s excellent dairy produce and local crafts.

The town, which is easily accessed via the Atlantic Highway and A386, is a vibrant local centre which offers excellent access to the coast and offers plenty of sports and activities, including sailing and walking. The town is also known for its New Year’s Eve celebrations with thousands of people taking to the Quay in fancy dress for the celebrations.

From the quay, take a boat trip to Lundy Island about 12 miles away in the Bristol Channel. Scattered around Bideford are some charming villages offering many fascinations to be discovered. And for exploring more of what nature has to offer, not too far away is the start of the Tarka Trail and the beautiful Exmoor National Park. And if art and antiquities are your thing, Bideford has its very own art gallery and museum, located on Kingsley Road. The building houses exhibition spaces, museum, craft gallery, workshop, lecture area, gift shop and coffee shop.

The A39 link road gives access to the regional centre of Barnstaple, about 10 miles, housing the areas main business, commercial, entertainment and shopping venues. The A39 leads onto the A361 and thereafter junction 27 of the M5, just beyond Tiverton.

“They were the loveliest of sellers and really helpful, giving us loads of advice on how best to care for them [the pigs]. The pigs are lovely, really healthy and happy. Thank you for the auction. ”
