Top 10 things to do in the West Country this Christmas

Keep the whole family entertained this festive season with our top 10 things to do in the West Country this Christmas.

1. The Winter Gift Fayre, Truro

From Tuesday 12th to Sunday 17th December, The Piazza at Lemon Quay will be transformed into a cornucopia of craft, jewellery, art, food and drink. With more than 180 traders showcasing their wares, this is the perfect opportunity to polish off your Christmas shopping while supporting local businesses.

2. Santa by Steam at South Devon Railway, Buckfastleigh

Join Father Christmas and his singing elves as you embark on a return trip from Buckfastleigh to Staverton between 16th and 24th December. Santa's special grotto train will be filled with entertainment, refreshments and excitement as each child will have the opportunity to meet Father Christmas himself and collect their special present. 

3. Sidmouth Boxing Day Swim

Once your turkey and Christmas pudding has gone down, it's time to brave the cold waters of Sidmouth and join the annual Boxing Day Swim. If you're feeling daring enough, meet at Port Royal at 11am - showers and refreshments will be available at Sidmouth Sailing Club and there will be prizes for the best fancy dress! 

4. Ice skating at Eden

Head to Cornwall's only indoor rink for the ultimate winter activity. With plenty of sessions to choose from including parent and toddler play sessions and chilly juniors sessions, all ages can enjoy life on the ice.

5. Santa Fun Run, Falmouth

On Saturday 16th December, gather your friends together, don your Santa suits and hit the streets of Falmouth for the annual Santa Fun Run. Whether you run, jog or walk your way around the one or three-mile route, this is a fun and festive event for the whole family and a great way to raise money for Hospice Care.

6. Treasure Hunt, Newton Abbot

 Can you find the 10 festive characters in the market hall? Free to take part, there will be a prize for anyone who seeks out the right number of Christmas figures. Pick up an answer sheet from the Traders Stall at Collectors Corner.

7. Nadelik Lowen - Cornish Christmas, Pendennis Castle

Enjoy Christmas the Cornish way with fireside tales, traditional dancing, mulled wine, mince pies, carol singing and crafts in the castle keep. Taking place on Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th December, this festive event also offers littlies the chance to meet Father Christmas in his historic green attire, as he takes up residence in the keep. 

8. Exeter Christmas Market on Cathedral Green

Fill your bags and your boots at this year's tempting Christmas market. With an impressve number of food and drink stalls offering everything from wood-fired pizzas to German bratwurst sausages and of course warming mulled wine, this atmospheric event is also a perfect opportunity to pick up last-minute stocking fillers.

 

9. Christmas at Dunster Castle, Somerset

Soak up the festive atmosphere and experience a Christmas the Luttrell family might have enjoyed at Dunster Castle. See the rooms dressed to reflect their stories and enjoy live festive music before setting off for an illuminated winter walk to see the gardens in a whole new light.
