Mike Noon MNAEA, Associate, Sales Valuer highlights some of the amazing lifestyle opportunities that come with living in and around Dartmoor National Park, and includes some beautiful properties on the market now in the area.

A fortunate number of people are able to call Dartmoor home, immersing themselves in an area rich in history, community, and natural beauty. This rugged expanse of moorland, with its rolling hills, ancient tors, and meandering rivers, offers an unparalleled lifestyle that blends tranquillity, adventure, and heritage, creating the perfect setting for a variety of hobbies and interests.

For the active hobbyist, Dartmoor National Park provides countless routes for walking, cycling, and horse riding. The infamous ‘Ten Tors’ challenge, with routes ranging from 35 to 55 miles, takes place annually, offering an incredible test of endurance. Many of these paths can be explored year-round, allowing residents and visitors alike to retrace the steps of past adventurers. Other notable routes include the Granite Way, which passes over the Meldon Viaduct, offering superb views of the surrounding moorland.

Water sports enthusiasts are well catered for, too. The River Dart is a prime location for kayakers, with the stretch from Dartmeet to Ashburton renowned as one of the best white-water routes in the country. Wild swimmers can take a refreshing dip at various points along the River Dart or in the secluded waters of Haytor Quarry.

Dotted across the moors are a range of charming villages, each with its own unique character and thriving local community. Traditional country pubs, independent shops, and community primary schools contribute to the welcoming atmosphere. Whether it’s a cosy tearoom in a remote hamlet, a family farm selling fresh, local produce, or a craft shop showcasing the work of local artists, these small businesses form the backbone of Dartmoor’s lifestyle.

Some picturesque towns and villages in Dartmoor include:

-          Widecombe-in-the-Moor, famous for its annual fair and breathtaking surroundings.

-          Chagford, known for its vibrant arts scene and strong community spirit.

-          Lustleigh, a postcard-perfect village with a beloved May Day celebration.

-          Princetown, steeped in history and a gateway for hikers and explorers.

-          Ashburton, home to a thriving food scene and a blend of traditional and modern charm.

Each village has a strong sense of identity, with locals coming together for fairs, markets, and seasonal celebrations, ensuring a close-knit and welcoming environment.

While Dartmoor offers a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of modern life, it is by no means cut off. Towns such as Tavistock, Okehampton, and Ashburton provide all essential amenities, and Exeter, with its vibrant cultural scene and excellent transport links, is just a short drive away. This balance makes Dartmoor an attractive option for those who seek rural serenity without complete isolation.

At Stags we have the honour of helping people looking to move across Dartmoor. Our offices are able to provide a platform where we can advise those looking to sell their unique home, or try and find their dream home.
