Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) 2026 – Window 2 Update

Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) 2026 – Window 2 Update Defra has announced that Window 2 of the SFI26 scheme is expected to open on Tuesday 22nd September 2026.

Window 1 opened as planned for a period of two months and closed on 28th August 2026.

As part of a wider package of measures to support farmers through the current drought conditions, Defra has allocated an additional £50 million to SFI26. This brings the total scheme budget to £290 million.

Who Can Apply in Window 2?

Window 2 provides an opportunity for all eligible farmers and land managers to apply for support through SFI26.

Farmers with eligible Environmental Land Management (ELM) revenue schemes and agreements ending on or before 28 February 2027 will also be able to apply for SFI26 Window 2 before their existing agreement comes to an end. If an application is successful, the new SFI26 agreement will commence once the existing agreement has expired.

Defra has also confirmed that applications started during Window 1 but not submitted will remain on the system. This means applicants will be able to complete and submit their existing application when Window 2 opens.

Looking ahead to SFI27

Defra has also confirmed its plans to offer an SFI27 scheme in 2027. Following Window 2 of SFI26, Defra will consider whether any refinements are required for SFI27 and will provide further information on the scheme as soon as possible.

With Window 2 now expected to open this September, it is important that farmers and land managers prepare in advance to maximise the opportunities available.
