Online Auctions – A multitude of possibilities!

Online Auctions – A multitude of possibilities!

The year of 2021 saw the term ‘online auction’ become a much more familiar phrase for many across the agricultural community, and it appears from its growth it is here to stay.

Stags started conducting online timed auctions of mainly agricultural equipment in 2017 and were well-placed to help sellers capitalise on the increased demand when the Covid-19 pandemic started in Spring 2020. The total value of goods sold via our online timed auctions has grown from £1.5 million in 2020 to just over £4 million in 2021. The rise in sale value has been followed by the rise in lots sold, with 2600 lots sold in 2020 and over 7000 sold in 2021. Another notable increase has been the number of registered bidders, which have increased from in 3300 in 2020 to over 7600 in 2021, with many more buyers now registered from across the UK, with some even from overseas.

What is also noticeable is that the range of lots being sold on our online timed auction are not all just ‘agricultural’, with more cars, plant, commercial and building equipment now being sold. 2021 also saw Stags disperse the entire contents of Haymans Butchers shop in Sidmouth and the furnishings and equipment of a well-renowned coastal wedding venue in Wembury, near Plymouth. Both vendors were able to sell all the equipment in situ without having to move them to another location, saving much cost, and the auctioneers were able to deal with the viewing days, lotting and collection days, making it a very complete service. Tailored targeted marketing allowed the sales to reach the right people looking for these niche items and ensured really strong prices, with both vendors’ price expectations exceeded by wide margins.

2021 also saw Stags hold their first live webcast auction in September at Tree Farm, Black Dog, where we dispersed a vintage collection of tractors, implements and many other farming bygones. The live webcast allows live bidding online as well as bidding on site at the farm. A number of live webcast sales have now been conducted, with an increasing number of buyers registering and choosing to bid from home, again widening the audience of our on site sales. The live webcast has also been introduced at our permanent sale site at Willand, The Westcountry Sales Centre, where our first such sale in November 2021 was a real success and we look forward to building on this year.

The Stags team look forward to the year ahead and building on the continued success of our online timed auctions and live webcast sales.
