Obtaining and delivering Capital Grants

Miles Webber, Head of Estate Management for Stags, discusses the department’s success in obtaining and delivering large Capital Grant projects.

Stags acts as managing agent for a number of diverse rural Estates and, alongside our core role, we have developed a strong track record of obtaining and delivering large capital grant projects. Such projects help the redevelopment and invigoration of both in-hand and let property.

Recent examples include re-roofing and structural repairs to Powderham Castle, where we helped identify Covid-19 grant streams; writing a successful grant application; overseeing planning permissions and listed building consents; tendering the project and project managing the works. The works were even documented by Nick Knowles’ Heritage Rescue TV programme which added to the excitement.

We have also helped obtain and deliver numerous Rural Development Programme for England (RDPE) Grant Schemes, including:

  • The expansion and redevelopment of Occombe Farm Shop, Torquay, where we helped identify and write the successful grant application to aid the expansion and development of the farm shop.
  • Milestone Vets, Kenton, where we helped negotiate and agree terms for an improving lease as well as identify and write the successful grant application to facilitate the conversion of a disused traditional building into a new veterinary practice.
  • Powderham Castle Tourism Infrastructural Grant Works, where we again helped identify and write a successful grant application, oversaw planning permissions and listed building consents, tender of the project and project managed a scheme of infrastructure improvements, including creation of a new Welcome Centre and Visitor Car Park.

We find the delivery of such large capital projects can be aided by grant frameworks, as well as grant funding. Furthermore, the multifaceted skillset of our surveyors, including business forecasting, planning, valuation and construction knowledge, helps our clients obtain and deliver such schemes.

We are always happy to discuss opportunities and, as detailed above, can vary our level of input. Furthermore, in addition to these larger, more complex, grant schemes, we also deal with routine rural grant schemes, including stewardship, rural payments and farm improvement grants.
