5 West Country riding destinations

5 West Country riding destinations

The South West is rich in scenic places for horse-riding, walking and cycling. So, when it comes to deciding the next adventure for you and your noble steed, the possibilities are endless. We have hand-picked our top five West Country riding destinations to give you a little taster of the opportunities this beautiful region brings:

1. Exmoor National Park

With over 300 miles of bridleways to explore, open moorland, country lanes, fields and peaceful woodland, there is a wide range of riding opportunities on Exmoor. Tarr Steps, Winsford and Exford are all beautiful and have popular pubs and cafes for that all-important post-ride refresher.

2. Clay Trails, Cornwall

Created by the 250-year-old clay mining industry, this striking scenery is now home to miles of accessible trails and lots of local wildlife. This network of trails follows old railway lines between St Austell and Pentewan, through secluded woodland and along the banks of White River.

3. Dartmoor National Park

The wild and rugged Dartmoor landscape makes for unforgettable rides. Climb high for the most spectacular views, being sure to be careful of what terrain you are on, or ride out on the open moor to really stretch your horse’s legs. With plenty of pony-friendly pubs to choose from, many providing water, tie-ups and even paddocks, both horse and rider can rest and refuel along the way.

4. Bodmin Moor

Long inspiring writers and artists with its wild and untouched landscape, much of Bodmin’s medieval past remains untouched to this day. Riding the spectacular granite tors past old settlements and stone circles offers breathtaking views of the county below.

5. Exmouth Beach

No riding round-up is complete without a beach and Exmouth is an excellent choice. A walk or gallop along the sand is invigorating and refreshing for both horse and rider, as is a dip in the sea if your horse is willing! Do pick your timing wisely though to avoid the beach being crowded.
