Many who have the privilege of owning or riding horses regard the West Country as the best parts of the UK to enjoy such a lifestyle. Rolling hills, open moorland and numerous bridle paths offering excellent conditions for riders of all ages and abilities, whatever the weather, through picturesque countryside. One area particularly revered by the equestrian world is Dartmoor National Park and the South Hams in South Devon, a region where amateurs through to professionals can enjoy exceptional outriding and facilities.
Dartmoor speaks for itself; miles of open moorland provide superb riding, with ample parking facilities for horse boxes and trailers. Those hacking are spoilt for choice, whether they prefer a gentle jaunt or a gallop set against the backdrop of far-reaching views and impressive granite tors. Added bonuses include charming moorland villages, often featuring traditional pubs where both horse and rider can take a well-earned break. In South Dartmoor, one of the best-known spots to ride from is Haytor, where you can follow the old granite railway with breath-taking views toward Haytor and Hound Tor.
For equestrian facilities, Dartmoor does not disappoint. Holwell Lawn, for instance, is home to the South Devon Moorland Pony Club, hosting a variety of rallies and events, including show jumping, cross-country, and dressage.
The stunning South Hams also offers an idyllic setting for horses and riders. A network of bridle paths, unmetalled roads, and quiet country lanes provides ideal routes for a weekend hack or a relaxing summer evening ride. Equestrian enthusiasts will also appreciate Redpost Equestrian, a highly regarded store located between Totnes and Newton Abbot. Stocking an extensive range of clothing, equipment, and horse care products, and its adjoining arena hosts a variety of shows and offers arena hire throughout the year.
Due to its popularity, equestrian properties in this part of the world remain in high demand, and finding the perfect one can sometimes prove challenging. In 2024, our Stags Totnes office had the privilege of handling a variety of equestrian sales including Higher Loady Park on the outskirts of Newton Abbot. A traditional farmhouse in need of modernisation was accompanied by 5 acres being serviced by stabling, hay stores and storage.

Sungleam, a beautiful family home was also successful sold by Stags. Located in a stunning area with an almost uninterrupted view across the surrounding countryside. This arts and crafts style home, built in the 20th century, offers excellent accommodation and over 6 acres of grounds including paddocks, with easy access to the moors.

Another recently sold equestrian property in the area was Otter Court, a spacious barn conversion set within a courtyard of barns with an associated paddock and versatile pasture.
