Bideford - The best of both

Sam McCreadie, Associate and Stags Bideford Branch Manager, discusses Bideford and the surrounding districts' beautiful coastline and countryside, which offers the ‘best of both’ for anybody wishing to relocate to North Devon.

Bideford is one of North Devon's finest and most distinctive towns, with a rich history to match its charming appearance. Holidaymakers have been flocking to The Quay for many years due to the abundance of fantastic pubs, restaurants, cafés and fish and chip shops from which to enjoy the river views. It's simple to understand why it's a favourite for anyone visiting North Devon. Victoria Park, a beautifully designed town park, is in the heart of the town and a range of independent shops can be found in the town’s high street.

Westward Ho!, about three miles from Bideford, is one of the nicest sandy beaches in North Devon for those wanting a seaside lifestyle. It stretches alongside a vast natural reserve and a beautiful golf course. Westward Ho! has precisely aligned itself to give everything to beachgoers; conditions can be ideal for surfing, paddling, sea swimming, paddle boarding, kite surfing and a variety of other activities.

The lovely town of Instow, on the opposite side of the estuary, boasts a long stretch of sandy beach. It is great for dog walking and also ideal for any sailing enthusiast, with the busy North Devon yacht club being headquartered here. It also has a number of excellent restaurants, pubs and cafes that are all dog-friendly. A ferry connects Instow to Appledore, a charming and ancient fishing village with meandering small alleys, colourful character residences and a flourishing local community.

For those looking for a more dramatic coastline with a wonderful combination of country and coast, as well as an abundance of walks on the South West Coast Path, Abbotsham, Mouthmill Beach, and Hartland Quay are just a few of the nearby spots to experience breath-taking vistas. Clovelly, a beautiful 14th century harbour village, is located further afield yet is only a 20-minute drive from Bideford. Clovelly is famous for being privately owned and having no automobile access (meaning goods are brought down via sledge by the locals), cobblestone alleys and whitewashed cottages. It is easy to understand why it is one of the most visited villages in the UK.

The year 2021 saw a huge surge in market activity, with the desire to live closer to the sea or the countryside dominating. It is clear that this trend will continue, especially with summer approaching. Bideford and the surrounding districts are rapidly becoming more sought after, offering the ‘best of both’, with beautiful coastline and countryside, for anybody wishing to relocate to North Devon.
