Autumn Devon Connections: Tuesday 27 August

Autumn Devon Connections: Tuesday 27 August

A good entry of cattle (94 head) met a strong company of buyers which resulted in a total clearance but more importantly vendors pleased with the trade with perhaps with the exception of those with cows and calves for sale.

The sale started off with the commercial section where both purebred and cross bred steers attracted very keen interest with plenty of bidders for each lot. The quality of cattle on offer was high and buyers were keen to secure cattle which are a bit easier to feed. There were butcher/feeders in the crowd which must boost the confidence of those breeding Devon cattle. 19 month old steers topped at £905 from Richard Greed of North Molton selling to Roger Hopper of Bude and yearlings from Mr DE Pile and Son of Lynton selling at £710 to Mr BC Hawkins  of Exeter.

In the pedigree section the cows and calves met with subdued demand which was disappointing but following the current trend which is seeing a severe contraction of the beef breeding herd nationally. A paradox really when the purebred steers are in such demand. Served heifers from Chris and Tortie Eveleigh and Family of Lynton were the highlight of the section with well bred and well farmed individuals finding new homes in Wales at £987 & £966.

We are already looking forward to next Spring’s sale entry forms will be ready in March but if you have cattle to sell either then or before please contact Andy on 07799 036143 or Chris on 07968 122198
