Preparing your home for an autumn sale

Preparing your home for an autumn sale

With the evenings drawing in and the weather getting cooler, there are different ways you can make your house appeal to potential buyers.

Here are our favourite tips to help you achieve the right look to sell this autumn.

First impressions count

Before any viewers set foot inside, they will already have a first impression of your property.

Start off on the right foot by clearing away any leaves on your path or in front of your house, trimming back hedges and removing any weeds or dead plants. With wintery weather approaching, litter or recycling may have blown in front of your house and will need to be tidied away. Keep your bins in a bin store if possible, to not only look more appealing but to keep rubbish from being blown about!

Switch on the lights

Try to arrange viewings to fall in the daylight hours if possible, so your house will be at its most bright and airy. Open blinds and curtains, clean windows and hang mirrors to enhance your rooms.

Additionally, especially if viewings are being held in the evenings, turning on all the lights can help show your property off fully. A simple side lamp can light up a gloomy corner and create a homely atmosphere in any room.

Turn on the heating

Make sure your home feels warm and inviting when potential buyers visit. Put your heating on a timer so it switches on before they arrive, or, if you have one, light a fire just beforehand.

This will be a nice contrast to the autumn chill outside and make your viewers instantly feel cosy and at home.

Appeal to the senses

For an even cosier feel for anyone stepping through your front door, add some autumnal smells into your home. A well-timed batch of baking or scented candles in scents such as cinnamon, vanilla or spiced apple will ensure an instant appeal.

Autumn feeling

Luxurious fabrics such as velvet cushions, knitted blankets and plush rugs in rich colours such as burnt orange, shades of brown and forest green will add both texture and warmth.

Outside space

Whilst the summer days of splashing about in paddling pools or enjoying a barbecue in the sun might be behind us for now, many people still utilise their outside space over autumn and winter, and those who don’t will be thinking ahead to spring. Because of this, your outside space will still play an important part in the sale of your home.

Keep up with weeding and mowing and remove any dead plants and replace them with seasonal ones that will brighten your home; even hanging baskets add a lovely splash of colour. Jet-wash your patio and paths for an instant refresh.
