Devon County Council launch marketing of four farms to let

Devon County Council launch marketing of four farms to let

In light of these farms being advertised to let, Head of Tiverton Professional Services, Matthew Wilcox (MRICS), sets out some thoughts and tips to help guide you on the journey of applying for a Farm Business Tenancy.

Opportunities to fulfil the ambition of living and working full-time on a farm are rare which makes it essential to prepare your application and present yourself to the best of your ability. As the tender process is competitive you need to fully understand the holding you apply for and what your farming capacity is which will still allow you to live sustainably.

Before making the application, you should read the particulars in detail, together with any supporting material that may be included within the tender pack, such as management plans and information about any agri-environment agreements that may be in place.

You should attend a viewing day to develop a relationship with the hosts and sell yourself by showing good communication skills and a positive, enthusiastic approach. Having the opportunity to meet the outgoing tenant would provide an invaluable source of information but the aim of the day is to properly inspect the holding and gather as much information as possible.

Most farm lettings will require you to submit a tender form, CV and a business plan whilst some organisations, such as county councils, may also request an application form which involves personal and financial information.

Throughout the whole process, good professional advice will help guide your application and ensure that you address the points they require and present yourself and your proposals in the best light.

The Devon County Council farms are located across Devon with viewing days either on the 13th or 14th December 2023.
